Will Ferrell movie The Other Guys has knocked Inception off the top of the US box office. The police parody, which also stars Mark Wahlberg, made $35.6m (£22.3m) in its opening weekend, according to early estimates.

Christopher Nolan thriller Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, had been at number one for the past three weeks.

Another new entry this week, dance sequel Step up 3-D, went straight in at number three, taking $15.5m (£9.7m). The Other Guys was made with Ferrell's frequent collaborator, writer and director Adam Kay.

The film was the second highest opening for the pair, following Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which debuted with $47m in August 2006.

Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, said Ferrell and Kay were "at the top of their game."

"They bring out the best of each other," he said.

The supporting cast includes Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes, Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Other films that made the top 10 include Despicable Me, Charlie St Cloud and The Kids Are All Right.

Will Farrell was on the cover of Rip It Up Magazine issue 322 April/May 2008.
