Press Release

An exciting and eclectic array of musical acts from New Zealand will grace the stage at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon festival in New York City to offer a taste of indie-rock, synth-pop and future soul. The NZ@CMJ Showcase is one of CMJ’s opening night events and is a collaboration between New Zealand music promotion agencies NZ On Air and the NZ Music Commission.

The NZ@CMJ 2010 events takes place at (le) Poisson Rouge on Tuesday, October 19th and features performances from New Zealand artists Zowie, Street Chant, Kids Of 88, Electric Wire Hustle and Lawrence Arabia. Also on the bill is songstress Ruby Frost, the winner of 42 Below’s 42Unheard competition. With a unanimous win over hundreds of other acts, Frost walked away with a recording contract from Universal Music, funding from NZ On Air for a music video and a trip to play at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon.

The NZ@CMJ showcase event began in 2007. The inaugural event was dubbed “one of the hottest tickets at CMJ” by UK music bible NME and helped gain traction for the likes of Liam Finn, Cut Off Your Hands and The Brunettes. The word spread and subsequent shows were crammed too for Bang Bang Eche, The Naked & Famous, Die! Die! Die! and college radio darlings The Ruby Suns.

Vice President of Content at CMJ Network Rev. Moose says, “New Zealand knows how to party with style.  I'm always impressed with the quality of artists represented by this relatively small population from the other side of the globe.  The Kiwis have done a stellar job branding their nationality as a collection of stunning sounds from deserving new talent.  CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival is proud to be a destination for emerging artists from such a bountiful source.”
