NEWS: Sofia Coppola Wins At Venice Film Festival

Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, the tale of an actor who sees the emptiness of his existence through the eyes of his child, has won the top Golden Lion prize at the 67th Venice Film Festival.

Coppola who is an academy award winning director for Lost In Translation became the first American women in the the prestigious film awards history to ever win the Golden Lion.

Director Quentin Tarantino headed the jury, which unanimously chose Coppola's film as the best movie at the 11-day annual festival.

"This film enchanted us from its first screening," Tarantino said on Saturday. "It has the artistry we were looking for in a Golden Lion" winner, he told the closing ceremony.

The film stars Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies) and Elle Fanning, younger sister to Dakota. Coppola has described the film, which made its world premiere at Venice, as a "portrait of today's LA."

  • Coppa Volpi (Best Actor): Vincent Gallo, “Essential Killing”

  • Osella (Best Screenplay): “A Sad Trumpet Ballad”
  • Marcella Mastroianni Award (Best Young Actor or Actress): Mila Kunis, “Black Swan”
  • Osella (Best Cinematography): “Silent Souls”
  • Special Lion for Overall Work: Monte Hellman
  • European Cinema Award: “The Clink of the Ice”
  • Leoncino d’Oro (Golden Lion Cub) Prize: “Barney’s Version”
  • Queer Lion (Best Gay Film): “In the Future”
  • Brian Award: “The Kisses Never Given”
  • UNICEF Award: “Miral”
