NEWS: The Whites Stripes Have Broken Up

Jack and Meg White (who presented themselves as brother and sister but were actually ex-husband and wife) released the news with a statement on their website whitestripes.com

"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health," the statement reads.

The stripped down American rock duo formed have released six studio albums in their active years. BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel promoted the band in the early stages of their existence.

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want," the statement continues.

"The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if you want it to. Thank you for sharing the experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."
