NEWS: 2012 Big Day Out To Be The Last In NZ
Tuesday , 18 Jan 2011
2012 will officially be the final year Big Day Out will be gracing our shores.
Festival boss Ken West announced last night that bringing the festival to New Zealand was no longer "financially viable". He added "In terms of what has been put on the line every year for Auckland, flying everything through, it has felt the risk of taking it on next year would be too great”.
A message on Big Day Out Auckland's Twitter page on Tuesday evening confirmed the axing with the following statement, "This year will be New Zealand's last Big Day Out. Come party with us this Friday. It's been an amazing 18 years here in Auckland".
NZ Promoter Campbell Smith also tweeted last night: "It's a sad day for me. And team. BDO best job I've ever had. Proud tho. Friday will be a party, big wave goodbye to a brilliant music icon."
Since it first inception in New Zealand back in 1994, the Big Day Out has been a staple summer event for kiwi music fans playing host to such acts as Rage Against the Machine, Coldplay, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Smashing Pumpkins to name but a few.
The festival's Australian shows would continue.
What do you think about the news Big Day Out wont be back in NZ?
