NEWS: TV On The Radio Bassist Gerard Smith Has Died

Thursday , 21 Apr 2011

Here's some sad news to start the day with. TV On The Radio's bass player Gerard Smith, 34, has lost his battle with lung cancer. Posting on their website, TV On The Radio have released the following statement:

"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly".

It was announced last month that Smith was taking a leave of absence from the band to seek help for the illness and would not be touring with the band in support of their new album, Nine Types of Light.

Initial reports we're positive with the band saying Smith had health insurance, great medical care and had already seen "dramatic results" from the treatment.

TV on the Radio have cancelled four upcoming U.S. shows in light of Smith’s death.
