Books filled with scribbles, musings and random trains of thought are all fine and good when they give the reader the ability to delve into the inner thoughts and mind processes of one of their favourite musicians. These books, however, are a little strange when the musician in question is one that has had little time in the spotlight in recent years, and has a niche following in the local electronic music scene.
This little ditty by Minuit’s frontwoman Ruth Carr is an ok read. And unfortunately that’s all there really is to it. It’s small enough to have read in its entirety before falling asleep on a night when you’re exhausted (speaking from personal experience here), and it contains a few bright gems, but most of the musings and doodles are simply poems about day to day problems, thoughts and dramas, that do little to spark any real emotional response.
Separated into three parts: life, death and life and death, this gives the reader instances of divulgence into the inner thought processes of Carr’s mind, but all too often it also gives the distinct impression that that’s exactly what she trying to give the reader, and that she’s making an effort to make those processes as quirky and off the rails as possible.
It would be interesting to know for sure whether the pages of I Feel Like a Fight, Alright were put together before, or after, the book concept and deal came about.
