REVIEW: Phace & Misanthrop - From Deep Space

Despite the duo being best known for their drum n bass production, the album’s standout comes in the form of an electro track, ‘Generation For Sale’.

Germans are well known for their industry and machine like precision, and the industrial influence on this drum n bass duo is evident here. However, the ever present machine like nature of From Deep Space does not serve the album well. Precision, while fantastic for ensuring your train is always on time, is not always as useful for inspiring listeners. There are some standout moments amongst this flatline, such as the obviously science fiction inspired title track ‘From Deep Space’. It’s a funky roller with just the right amount of extra bounce to set off the dancefloor, offset with a driving riff with the eerie atmosphere completed by the well used vocal sample, “The seed is planted from deep space.” Despite the duo being best known for their drum n bass production, the album’s standout comes in the form of an electro track, ‘Generation For Sale’. Much like the electro their friends and occasional collaborators Noisia have been known to produce, this is electro with an extra layer of dirt, with neurofunk elements taking over from the normal house influences.
