He may be the go-to rapper for every pop/dance track cluttering up the top 50 right now, but Pitbull has been chipping away and carving out a career for a few years now. This is in fact his sixth studio album, and although he may not be winning lyricist awards any time soon, there’s no denying that he is winning a lot of fans.
Planet Pit is aimed squarely at getting the party started and keeping it going, and for the most part it succeeds. Sure there’s plenty of tasteless bravado about things like being able to make girls orgasmic (‘Come N Go’) and encouraging lap dancers to do a good job (‘Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor)’), but every crude, chauvinistic subject rides a driving beat that pulls even the most offended of listener in the direction of the dancefloor. There are a couple of departures from the boasting, babes and bling in the shape of the ‘Love The Way You Lie’-styled ‘Castle Made Of Sand’ featuring Kelly Rowland, and the emotionless tale of heartbreak ‘Took My Love’.
But it’s not long before the Miami dog gets right back to what he does best, barking about booty on the silly but undeniably club ready ‘Something For The DJ’s’, and tag-teaming fellow female-objectifier Akon on the after-one-thing anthem ‘Mr Right Now’. If you want deep and meaningful, you’ve come to the wrong place - but if you just wanna dance, welcome to the pit.
