From the minute the first track ‘Bridge Burning’ explodes from your speakers, you know quite clearly that this is a new album from the Foos - delivering yet another collection of absolute stormers that would fill any stadium to capacity and then some.
Wasting Light hits you like a bullet in the face as Dave Grohl screams, “These are my famous last words”, aided by a wall of feedback-heavy noise, and then a chorus kicking in - all literally in less than a minute. Phew. Single ‘Rope’ to follow is classic Foo Fighters as their hard rock best, whilst ‘Dear Rosemary’ is a slightly twisted love song and among the album’s quieter moments.
Things shift back into high gear with the arrival of ‘White Limo’ however, which has a metal-esque feel that harks back to Grohl’s Probot outing of a few years ago, and the song’s accompanying video featuring the legendary Lemmy. The endearingly grubby ‘Back And Forth’ is another highlight, whilst ‘Miss The Misery’ is another return to the usual Foos shtick that will have the fans screaming for more...like they ever stopped.
Final track ‘Walk’ is as epic as it gets, and a fitting close to a bloody great album. No, they haven’t veered off course and given us something radically different, but this testosterone-heavy sound is what we’ve come to know and love, and dare I say it...it’s got even better.
