Wolf Gang

Suego Faults
(Atlantic)
(out of 5)

I couldn't help but sit in amazement when listening to the opening track (‘Lions In Cages’) of Wolf Gang's Suego Faults. The melody, the rhythm, the resonance… all of which felt like I was listening to an appropriation of MGMT's Kids’.

There's no mistaking there is that - I believe the term is ‘symphonic rock’ - aspect the group are going for, and they do it really well. But sometimes it plays off as a slightly belated sister to the aforementioned group. While on the surface it seems like a pastiche to 2007/2008, the group have honed in on that sound. ‘Stay And Defend’ is very much a delightful, flighty symposium of love, while ‘The King And All Of His Men’ will no doubt be appreciated by fans of the Temper Trap or the Naked and Famous.

Perhaps it's coming from a perspective where the rise of this sort of music has seemingly been and gone in some circles out here in New Zealand. Maybe this stuff is fresh and new in the United Kingdom, where it is garnering popularity. It just feels quite dated by today's standard - and when your lyrical content references MySpace, you get the idea just how much so.
