There is no denying that the members of Wu-Tang do possess legendary weapons; Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Wu-Tang Forever are indisputable proof of that. But living up to such genre defining works and staying relevant are not easy tasks even for talents as great as the original killer bees. And it doesn’t help that new Clan memberships are constantly being handed out to MCs that lack the necessary skills.
Still, amongst the lesser offerings on this Wu compilation there are moments of brilliance from original members who seem to appear and disappear like ghosts. Speaking of which, Ghostface proves yet again that he hasn’t lost any of his spit on the tracks he graces, like ‘Laced Cheeba’ where he sprays, “With sharkskin Air Max’s and igloos of ice/Rocks clumped up like overcooked rice”.
The soulful ‘Never Feel This Pain’, where Inspectah Deck and U-God lace lines of hard times may not be your standard Wu-fare, but it does encourage repeat listenings.
And ‘225 Rounds’ sees RZA puffing out his chest to the ladies with lyrics like, “Spider-Man amazin’ but I’m darker than Parker/skin got abrasions from Maria and Tasha”. W
ith kung-fu samples and dirty beats in check, it may not be the next great return of Wu, but it still takes more ammunition into battle than most of today’s Hip Hop front liners.
