RIP IT UP MOVIE CLUB: Three Films We Can't Wait To See This Summer

Tuesday , 27 Dec 2011

Here's a lil sneak peak to three films we can't wait to see this summer.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Social Network was a truly brilliant film from filmmaker David Fincher. One of the many elements that made it so fantastic was his use of Nine Inch Nails main man Trent Reznor on the soundtrack.

When it was announced that Hollywood was to remake hit Swedish crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it seemed absolutely ideal for the next Fincher and Reznor collaboration and the trailer promises they’ve gotten it pretty much perfectly right.

Although this very nipply poster seems to completely miss the whole empowerment of women thing that the Dragon Tattoo celebrated, Fincher is simply too smart a man to have missed that point and I’m sure he’ll cunningly subvert this apparent objectification of women within the film itself.

No matter how good the movie is though, it is a shame that Fincher and Reznor are collaborating on a remake, and I hope they co-create another completely original project soon.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is in cinemas on January 26 2012.

Hunger Games
When someone describes a movie as Battle Royale meets The Running Man, the phrase ‘dream come true’ runs through my mind.

Of course, Hunger Games won’t be that good, but that’s how I first heard it described and I’m still pretty excited. It’s being adapted from a hugely popular American novel written by Suzanne Collins. Set in a harsh future, it’s a story of poor people being forced to send some of their unlucky young into a televised competition in which they have to kill each other off until only one survives.

Should they refuse participation in this cruel and wicked death game, the poor are deprived of food. Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence is the lead with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci in support. Set for a March 2012 release, if they get the tone and feel of this one right it could be a real treat.

Hunger Games is set to be released on March 22nd 2012.

Dolphin Tale

Regular readers of Rip It Up will know that I’m a big fan of bloody action movies, gory horror flicks and lurid exploitation trash... but there’s a soft spot in my cold heart for dolphins, and dolphin movies.

They’re such amazing creatures. Dolphin and chimpanzee videos on YouTube are to me what I guess cat videos are to most people. Anyway, the Dolphin Tale trailer is pretty hilarious. It teases a movie with faux-U2 uplifting rock music as Morgan Freeman frets about an injured dolphin while a crying young girl, an introverted boy, Kris Kristofferson and a disabled athlete all somehow get involved and personally invested in nursing the dolphin back to health.

It looks incredibly, disgustingly cheesy, but it has heaps of 3D footage of Winter the dolphin playing herself, telling the true story of how she stayed alive after losing her tail.

And that guarantees I’ll watch it at the movies.

Dolphin Tale is out in cinemas on January 5th 2012.
