The Big Day Out 2011 line up was announced at 8am this morning from K Road, Auckland. It's a big one so book your tickets quick because it's very likely to sell out.

With over 40 amazing acts from home and around the world already on board it’s time to complete the picture of what’s in store for the 2011 BIG DAY OUT festival. For the record, 2011 was by far our biggest ever first announcement. BIG DAY OUT 2011 is ever evolving and to follow are the new additions musically and visually to complete the BIG DAY OUT 2011 line-up. As you would know BDO is not just about international acts. We truly believe in supporting local musicians, DJs and artists.

In addition to their forthcoming appearance at the Big Day Out in Auckland, Birds of Tokyo this week announce ‘The Big Night In’, a couple of special side shows for fans in New Zealand. Presented by Groove Guide and The Rock, Birds of Tokyo will head to Bodega in Wellington on Wednesday January 19, followed by a show at the Kings Arms Tavern in Auckland on Thursday January 20.

This summer, Big Day Out hits the shores of Auckland once again - but with a notable omission. Something will be missing. Rest assured the rock stars will be there – with a line up that includes such iconic names such as Rammstein, Tool, and Primal Scream, through to the indie talents of The Black Keys and Ratatat, and local names such as The Phoenix Foundation and Shihad. There’s definitely no shortage of amazing music to soak up in just one day.

The timetable for the Big Day Out in Auckland, January 2011 has been announced. Find out when your favourite band is playing using the image above. Here is some more detail about the main headliners. Rammstein will start at 8pm on the Orange stage, Tool at 9.15pm on the Blue stage, Grinderman at 10.30pm on the Green stage, The Phoenix Foundation at 9.45pm on the Converse Essential stage, MIA at 10.30 at the Boiler Room and Black Milk at 10.30pm at the Smokefree Local Produce stage.

I’m proud to say this was my fifth Big Day Out, and despite the torrential downpour, it was still one of my favourite years. The Big Day Out yesterday released its sitemap for 2012, revealing a reconfiguration of Auckland's Mt Smart stadium from previous years including a major change to event access with the closing of the Maurice Road gate (previously known as Gate A).
