PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Killing Joke - The Singles Collection Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Killing Joke - The Singles Collection With a career spanning more than three decades, June sees Killing Joke playing their first ever New Zealand shows. The shows come as part of a tour in celebration of this recently released single collection, and the breadth and quality of the composite tracks serve as an injection of excitement in anticipation of the shows.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Bad Religion - True North Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Bad Religion - True North Fans of the Suffer and No Control albums rejoice. True North sees Bad Religion’s songwriters – the 48-year-old Greg Graffin and 50-year-old Brett Gurewitz – channelling their vicenarian selves in a celebration of the band’s golden years of fast melodic punk rock. It’s what the band set out to achieve on this album and they do so admirably.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Hard and Fast Living, Frank Turner Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Hard and Fast Living, Frank Turner Frank Turner is a ridiculously busy man. Having started out as the vocalist for post-hardcore outfit Million Dead, the punk-rocker turned folk-rock singer is gearing up to release his sixth solo album in almost as many years and has recently delved into the world of side projects with a hardcore band called Möngöl Hörde.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Dorena- Nuet Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Dorena- Nuet It’s a genre that in recent years has faced an unfortunate consensus of derision among critics, but when post-rock is done well it can be the most evocative and emotive of music.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: The Lawrence Arms - Apathy and Exhaustion Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: The Lawrence Arms - Apathy and Exhaustion The Lawrence Arms had pretty much all but fallen off the radar. It's true that they dallied with the 7” format back in 2009 with Buttsweat and Tears, but that was merely a move that created momentary joy and anticipation, only to be followed by disappointment at the lack of anything to follow.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: This Drama - The Wasted Youth Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: This Drama - The Wasted Youth This is the fourth release from This Drama: a powerful rock/punk five-piece hailing from Tenerife in the Canary Island (of all places!!). And while The Wasted Youth is constituted of only four tracks, it’s a fantastic primer for those who’ve never heard of the band before.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind The downside to living in Wellington is the sheer number of internationals that come through and play a solitary Auckland show. Converge were one such band, shooting through last week, and by all accounts they played a stunningly blistering live set.
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill Brought to you by RIU
PAUL COMRIE-THOMSON'S BLOG: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill Neil Young copped a lot of flak for Americana. His first album with Crazy Horse since 2003’s Greendale was an album primarily made up of old folk numbers and was criticized for being ill-conceived, badly executed, and with terrible accompaniment – Crazy Horse particularly, never renowned for their technical proficiency, facing accusations of ‘calling it in’.
